Africa is the birthplace of humanity and the world’s second largest continent. The diaspora – those people who have spread from their homeland – can have a powerful impact on the development and wellbeing of the continent.
THE AFFORD STORY
In December 1993, Nicholas Atampugre wrote an article in the journal, Africa World Review, describing the irony of NGOs professing their concern for capacity building in Africa while ignoring the Africans living in their headquarter cities who were separately, yet simultaneously mobilising to support development in their regions of origin—the same places of focus for the NGOs.
AFFORD INSTITUTE
The AFFORD Institute brings together AFFORD’s policy elaboration and implementation work, focused on providing the evidence base to understand the impact of diaspora development interventions; as well as setting out policy recommendations that create an enabling environment which result in greater efficiency and impact for those contributions.
AFFORD DIASPORA FINANCE
AFFORD seeks to maximise the impact of diaspora financial and skills investment into Africa which has been estimated at between US$17.4 billion in 2018. AFFORD is delivering a number of exciting new investment and financial instruments, as well as a philanthropy/giving platform through which diaspora investment and resources can be mobilised and scaled to support wealth and job creation in Africa.

If you believe in the important work we are doing to grow Africa, AFFORD is the place for you.
CELEBRATE 30 YEARS OF AFFORD
For the last 30 years, AFFORD has strived to demonstrate the global significance of the African diaspora and to expand and enhance its positive contributions to the development of the African continent and the wider world. This has been realised through the actions of ordinary individuals making extraordinary, consistent contributions, from AFFORD’s founders, trustees, staff, resource persons, volunteers and by our many supporters over the last 30 years.
